Institutional compass

Ideas into Impact.

One connected place to learn, build, test, launch, sell, innovate and grow responsibly.

Purpose

To unlock creativity and capability so people and organisations can solve real problems through sustainable enterprise and responsible innovation.

Vision

A world where creativity becomes sustainable enterprise and innovation that improves lives, strengthens communities and protects the planet.

Mission

To equip people and organisations to turn real challenges into evidence-led, sustainable solutions through applied learning, venture building, innovation, market access, partnerships and continuous support.

Core values

How we make decisions when the work becomes difficult.

Our values are operating commitments. They guide how we design programmes, work with people, govern evidence and money, choose partners and judge whether progress is real.

01

Purpose & Impact

We start with problems that matter and remain accountable for whether our work creates useful, durable change.

What it looks likeDefine the intended outcome, measure what changes and avoid celebrating activity when evidence does not show progress.
02

Integrity & Accountability

We are clear about evidence, money, authority, status and results—even when the answer is incomplete or uncomfortable.

What it looks likeDecisions have owners, approvals are traceable, conflicts are disclosed and promises are matched to evidence.
03

Learning & Evidence

We treat assumptions as questions to test, not facts to defend. Learning should improve the next decision.

What it looks likeListen, experiment, review evidence, record lessons and change course when the facts require it.
04

Creativity & Innovation

We look for original, useful and responsible ways to solve difficult problems rather than repeating familiar approaches.

What it looks likeGenerate alternatives, prototype early, invite challenge and turn creativity into solutions people can actually use.
05

Dignity & Inclusion

People are participants in change—not data points, beneficiaries or audiences to be spoken for without consent.

What it looks likeDesign with people, protect privacy and safeguarding, remove avoidable barriers and respect different lived experiences.
06

Collaboration & Stewardship

Lasting solutions are rarely built alone. We combine capabilities while taking care of resources entrusted to us.

What it looks likeClarify roles, share evidence, honour partner boundaries and use funds, assets, time and relationships responsibly.
07

Sustainability & Resilience

We build solutions and institutions that can endure financially, socially and environmentally.

What it looks likePlan beyond launch, manage risk, strengthen operating models and avoid growth that weakens mission or resilience.

Our meaning

Ubunifu means creativity — and creativity is where change begins.

The Kiswahili word ubunifu translates to creativity. For us, creativity is not decoration or novelty. It is the ability to understand a difficult situation, see possibilities that are easy to miss and design a better response with the people who live the problem.

Creativity · see differently

Founders begin with curiosity, imagination and local knowledge: what is not working, who is affected and what could be different?

Innovation · learn quickly

Ideas become innovation when they are tested, challenged, adapted and supported by evidence rather than founder certainty alone.

Social enterprise · make it durable

A useful solution becomes a social enterprise when it can organise people, operations, customers, revenue and partnerships to sustain the change.

What we build

Creative and innovative social enterprises.

Ubunifu supports founders across sectors when their enterprise addresses a meaningful development challenge and can show a credible path to sustained value. The sector can vary; the discipline does not.

Problem worth solving

The challenge is material, understood in context and important to the people or environment affected.

Useful innovation

The solution offers a better approach, product, service, process or delivery model and is tested with the people it is meant to serve.

Sustainable enterprise

Customers, revenue, costs, delivery, team, compliance and governance become progressively credible.

Evidence of change

Impact claims move from assumptions to measured, calculated, verified or clearly qualified evidence.

How change happens

A social enterprise grows through repeated cycles of creativity, evidence and execution.

The journey is not perfectly linear. Evidence may send a founder back to redefine the problem, redesign the solution or rebuild the business model.

01

Listen

Understand the challenge, affected people and local context.

02

Imagine

Create alternative solutions and choose what is worth testing.

03

Experiment

Prototype, collect evidence and learn from failure early.

04

Build

Shape the enterprise model, team, operations, finance and governance.

05

Launch

Move into real delivery with responsible formation and community support.

06

Measure & strengthen

Track outcomes, improve the model and grow only what proves useful.

What Ubunifu provides

An incubation ecosystem, not a single course.

Practical learning, founder practice, Bootcamp, mentoring, formation support, technology coordination, Launch Harambee, market connections, research/evidence, county extension and twelve months of post-launch accompaniment work as one connected formation journey.

What Ubunifu is not

Clear institutional boundaries.

Ubunifu is not a university, not an investment fund and not a generic accelerator. It does not automatically take venture equity, guarantee capital, guarantee market success or convert course completion into Social Entrepreneur status.

Community-rooted, globally connected.

Ubunifu is headquartered at the Ubunifu Innovation Hub in Bomani, Kikambala, Kilifi County. Our model values local context and community ownership while connecting founders to mentors, researchers, buyers, institutions, technology and learning networks beyond their immediate geography.
